The
PineWood Racer interface is a device made to connect the computer to the
derby track. People used to use their eye to see which car finished first. But with some tracks racing six cars at one
time it gets kind of hard. Thus people started to use little
electronic boxes that were triggered when a car crossed the finish line. They
came in two fashions. The first type would indicate only which
car came across first, and the second type would tell the order of all the
cars.
The cost of these boxes was costly because they used a lot of electronic chips and were hand made. More and more people have moved over to computer tracking devices that can time the cars as they crossed the finish line. This device is designed to take the standard computer control to the next century. This product along with the software not only times the cars, but will also keep the track records. After the race is over it will print out the results of all cars that raced. It does all this by giving each car a unique number and when this car is raced the car's unique number is placed into the computer. The unique number is a barcode sticker on the car. The electronic interface is also designed with the capability to control the track itself. It can even start the race by dropping the gate and reset the gate (with an add on device). It's now self powered and can be expanded in the future. It connects to the computers Parallel Port and will work on an old 80386 computers, but the faster the computer the better the accuracy. So you can go get that old computer in your basement and put it back to work.
