The program starts to run but quits with no error message.

Symptom:  If you try and run one of the network programs and the program starts (and beeps) and then quickly terminates and returns back to windows.

Problem: The program attempts to start up the IPX/SPX networking protocol support but is unable to because the system does not have the protocol installed or the networking options are not enabled at all.     The problem can also be caused by a user upgrading from Windows98/ME to Windows XP system and then tried to run the network options of the program.

Solution: If you are running Windows 95, 98 or ME then you can use the directions found at: Questions and Answers   If you are not using one of the Operating Systems listed above then the network option is not supported.   By default the installer will not allow you to install the network programs onto an operating system that does not support the network.  But if the user upgrades from Windows 98 to Windows XP for example the program will not work.

When I try to print bar-code labels in WordPerfect I get an error.

Symptom:  You run the WordPerfect barcode label macro under using the Start > Programs > PineWood Racer > WordPerfect Documents > Make Bar-Codes and get a "Syntax Error".

Problem: The problem happens because your version of WordPerfect is a little different then my version.  And for some reason they don't like to convert the macro over automatically.

Solution: Start WordPerfect as you normally would start it (Start >Programs > WordPerfect > WordPerfect).  Select "Macros" from the "Tools" menu and click on "Play....."   You will get a "Play Macro" dialog box.   In this box you will need to find the macro file.   By default it is loaded in the "c:\program files\pinewood racer\templets" folder.   You will see a file with the name of "Bar-Code Macro.wcm", select this file and click on the Play button.  From now on all you will need to do is run the macro from the start menu and it will work.

No matter what I do I can't print.

Symptom:  You try every port and every driver and you can't print or keep getting error messages.

Problem: The printer is most likely a USB or "Windows Only" printer.  The program is designed to work only with printers that connect to a Parallel port.

Solution: Connect your printer to the Parallel port (printer port).  Most printers even though they are connected USB will also have a Parallel port.   But if you have one of those USB only printers you will be unable to print.   If you do not have an open Parallel port to use for the printer you can get a PCI card that will allow a Parallel port.  Or you can get a USB to Parallel printer adaptor.   But all these options will not help if you have a USB only printer.   The only option that I can recommend is using the print to file option.

  1. Run PineWood Racer program.
  2. Select "General Settings" in the "Edit" menu
  3. Click on "Printer Setup"
  4. Select the "Generic Text Only Printer"
  5. Select "To File" and give it a file name of "c:\pwr.txt"
  6. Click "Finished"
  7. Click "Save Settings"
  8. Once the program restarts you will be able to print.   Every time you print it over rights the last file.
  9. Once you have printed the information you need, then quit the program and return to Windows.
  10. Once in Windows select "Run" from the "Start" menu
  11. Type in "c:\pwr.txt" and press enter.
  12. Once the file loads you can print from this file.

Currently this is the only way you can print to a USB or Windows only printer.   In the next version you will be able to print to any printer.

I have a problem but it is not answered here.

If you have an error that is not described then please contact me ASAP!

Send me an EMail at and include all the information you can.

If you get a serious error, you will be given three error code numbers.

  1. PWR Error #:
  2. Error Type:
  3. Program Location:

I will need all three to assist with your problem.  If you do not get any error codes or the error is not from the PineWood Racer program it's self, then include all the messages that you receve and attach the following files out of your data folder.

  1. data.ini   (icon looks like a pad of paper with a gear in it)
  2. data.pwr  (icon looks like a race car)
  3. name.pwr  (icon looks like a race car)

You can get these files by clicking on (Start > Programs > PineWood Racer > Other Utilities > Race Data Folder)

If for some reason you are in the middle of a Derby race and you need to get me ASAP then EMail me with the word "emergency" in the title of the message.   And include a phone number where I can contact you at.   (I will get back to you as soon as possible)
